A message proclaimed in gentleness

The Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of truth that they may come to their senses… 2 Timothy 2:24-26

Why is it important for preachers to guard the content of their teaching and the character of their hearts? Why do ought we who long to see hearts transformed be kind, patient and gentle?

In a world that values passionate debate which often ends with one side being “shut down” and silenced by the wit and veracity of another. In a world where everyone feels that their opinion needs to be heard and wi shout and scream to defend itself.

The ambassador of God is called to gentleness, kindness and patience, particularly in their advocation of the gospel.

Why? Why not blunt hard facts. Why not making jokes and insults and shouting until we are heard?

Because we serve a God who delights to use the weak, lowly and “not” of this world to proclaim His message.

Because, as this passage above states, our gentleness can be the means through which “God may perhaps grant them repentance”.
